Extended Validation Certificates

EV SSL Certificates

Extended Validation (EV) SSL certificates offer the highest level of trust and are recognized as the industry standard for securing business websites. Essential for any site handling personal or financial information (such as eCommerce), EV certificates provide extra assurance to users.

To acquire this certificate, an organization must verify key details, including the legal company name, physical location, and domain ownership. A thorough vetting process is then conducted by a trusted entity before the certificate is issued. Sectigo, a leading Certificate Authority (CA), provides both single-domain and multi-domain (UCC/SAN) EV certificates.

Validation Requirements

EV validation basics consist of verifying the following:

  1. Organization legal name and that it is in good standing.
  2. Exact organization trade name / DBA (Doing Business As) if applicable.
  3. Who is currently operating the business.
  4. Address of where the business operates.
  5. Organization main listed telephone number.
  6. Who controls the domain(s) listed on the certificate.
  7. Authenticity of the subscriber agreement.

Tips when providing the organization details for an EV SSL certificate:

  1. Use the legally registered name of the organization. Do not enter the trade name/DBA (doing business as) as the legal name of the company.
  2. A trade name can be listed on the certificate with the legal name. The trade name/DBA (doing business as) must be registered in a government agency.
  3. Use the address where the organization conducts business. Do not use PO Box, mail stop/forwarding, care of, virtual office address or a registered agent address.

You can expect:

  1. Complete Domain Control Verification (DCV) to verify the domain(s) are controlled by the organization. This can be completed using 1 of 3 methods: DCV email, CNAME or HTTP(S) challenge.
  2. Telephone call through the main business phone number to the signer listed on the subscriber agreement to verify the signature, authority to sign, if signer is an employee of the organization and signer's title.
  3. An email with any additional actions if required.
